Description

John Deere TriCycler Mulch Kit 38-inch Deck

The mulching attachment allows converting the mower so it can be used to mulch grass or leaves.
The attachment consists of special mulching blade(s), a deflector ramp to direct the clippings into the blade for re-cutting, and a discharge closure plate with adjustable baffle.
  • The blades included are designed to work with the StarLockâ„¢ blade mounting system used on 38-in. Mowers for X300 Series Tractors and also for the 38-in. Mower without StarLock used on LT Series Tractors.
  • The special mulching blades included can also be used for side discharging, though overall cut quality may decline slightly.
Operating tips

Mulching:
  • Adjust baffle to the proper opening. The adjustable baffle can be moved to one of five positions to match conditions using the convenient wing nuts.
    • When mulching grass, the operator should start with the baffle set in the highest position (greatest opening).
    • In drier conditions or when mulching leaves, the baffles can be moved down to reduce the amount of material that is discharged.
NOTE: The holes in the adjustable baffle are intended for leaf mulching. When mulching dry leaves, the holes will allow some air and leaf particles to escape, reducing blowout in other areas of the mower. However, when mulching grass, these holes can be expected to plug.
  • Mow when grass is dry.
  • Observe the 1/3 rule.
    • No more than 1/3 of the grass blade should be cut off at one time. This allows more efficient mulching and will promote the continued good health of the grass. If the desired cut height can't be achieved by cutting off 1/3, or there is clumping of the clippings, it may be required to cut higher. Wait a day, then lower the mower and make a second pass.
  • Mow at proper intervals approximately every four to five days.
  • Always mow with a sharp blades.

Bagging:

  • Remove mulching attachment and install the appropriate medium or high lift blades.

Side-discharging:

  • Deflector ramp and discharge cover must be removed.
  • Special mulching blade may be used if satisfactory results are achieved; if not, remove and replace with standard blades.

Compatibility information

The mulching attachment is compatible with riding equipment having a seat safety switch (in good operating condition) to prevent an operator from adjusting the baffle while the mower is running.

The direction were not clear that you have to do some modifications to the mulcher, such as cutting into to fit the mower deck. Also it didn't clearly state that you only had to remove the top bolts to replace the blades. There was not a clear step by step picture of one step to the next. Now a John Deere technician could figure this out, but like me the average Joe, it was frustrating. I had to take to a guy that works on small engine repair and he figured out and explained to me how it was supposed to be mounted. He also corrected me on replacing the blade and why it was making a metal to metal noise. He said the washer that is part of the belt wheel goes under the fly wheel rather than on top. He said that it doubles as a spacer. Blades are on, but yet to attach the mulcher and deflector.

I had never removed my mower deck from my LT133 before. I thought this was going to be a difficult installation. It was not! It was simple. I had to refer to the owners manual to remove the deck, The mulcher attachment was easy to install; it just had to bolt in place using per-existing holes. I have used it a few times and has done a great job on the grass. Need to try some adjustments to do a better job on the leaves.

Mulch Kit
After years of bagging and composting the grass ( because my wife didn't want the dog to track the grass into the house ) and my neighbors thinking im nuts. I ordered this for my John Deer LX172 mower. Before i installed watched youtube video and was done in an hour. The performance was very impressive, the grass is imbedded back in so well my wife was impressed. Also just got to use it on the leaves and after 2 passes there completely mulched. I recommend this kit !!

Mulching kit for STX38
The instructions are a little wrong, but it was easy to see how part #3 really fits. I can't believe I didn't convert my mower sooner. I'm tired of bagging and vacuuming up my fertilizer. Mulching puts some material back on the ground to absorb moisture, too.

Mulch kit
Ordered this for my old LT155 because I was tired with all of the grass clippings on the lawn. I was surprised to see this was pretty much a direct fit and install. No drilling required. Super easy install and it is working great.

Nice Mulch Kit
I installed this on my LT150 Deere 38" tractor/mower. Very heavy-duty and works well. Instructions were slightly unclear at first, but once I started the install it became clear what I needed to do. Make sure you have a 3/8" drill to go through deck for one of the bolts. It's a thick nicely made deck - will take a good bit.

I have an acre of grass and in the fall loads of oak leaves. I installed the mulch kit (easy) and it works great. I should have done this years ago. Saves a lot of time and the leaves naturally feeds back into the soil which I'm pleased. I don't use fertilizer so this serves system serves a double purpose.

Best Mulcher I've Ever Used
Although the instructions were less than perfect, it was easy to figure out since the tolerances weren't so forgiving. Once installed, it was even better than I hoped. The grass looks like a beautiful carpet with no clumps visible anywhere. Couldn't ask for a better performing product.

Love it.
The kit was relatively easy to install however the directions did not always match the installation reqirements. The kit performance is outstanding (on grass). I should have installed it years ago. The lawn looks much better.
