Description

John Deere TriCycler Mulch Kit 54-inch Deck

The Tricycler system gets its name from the ability of a John Deere mower to bag, side discharge, or mulch to meet the three phases of lawn care that are associated with the changing seasons (spring, summer, or fall).

The Tricycler mulching attachment allows converting the mower so it can be used to perform the mulching function (grass or leaves) of this system.

The attachment consists of special mulching blades and deflector ramps to direct the clippings into the blade for re-cutting and a discharge closure with adjustable baffle.

Operating tips

Mulching:
  • Adjust baffle to the proper opening.
  • The adjustable baffle can be moved to one of five positions to match conditions using the convenient wing nuts.
    • When mulching grass, the operator should start with the baffle set in the highest position (greatest opening).
    • In drier conditions or when mulching leaves, the baffle can be moved down to reduce the amount of material that is discharged.

NOTE: The holes in the adjustable baffle are intended for leaf mulching. When mulching dry leaves, the holes will allow some air and leaf particles to escape, reducing blowout in other areas of the mower. However, when mulching grass, these holes can be expected to plug.

  • Mow when grass is dry.
  • Observe the 1/3 rule.
    • No more than 1/3 of the grass blade should be cut off at one time. This allows more efficient mulching and will promote the continued good health of the grass. If the desired cut height can't be achieved by cutting off 1/3, or there is clumping of the clippings, it may be required to cut higher. Wait a day then lower the mower and make a second pass.
  • Mow at proper intervals - approximately every 4 to 5 days.
  • Always mow with sharp blades.
  • When using the 48-in. Mower with the Tricycler, clippings are held in suspension under the mower until the power take-off (PTO) is shut off or the engine speed is reduced to slow the mower blades. When ready to stop mulching, slowing the engine speed while continuing to drive over the cut area will allow the suspended clippings to fall and disperse more evenly over the lawn.

Tips for special situations:

  • If mulching performance is not satisfactory, raising the mower to increase cut height, even a little bit, will often make a big difference.
  • If excessive clippings appear at the left edge of the mower, the left rear mower lip should be removed (if the mower is so equipped). This will promote better distribution of clippings.
  • If unacceptable clippings appear between the center and right blades on 1992 and earlier mowers, add the right rear lip to the mower.

NOTE: The wire form weldment on 1993 and later 48-in. Mowers make this lip unnecessary.

Side-discharging and using Power Flow™ material collection system (MCS):

  • Deflector ramp and discharge cover must be removed.
  • Special mulching blade may be used if satisfactory results are achieved; if not, remove and replace with standard blades.
  • Rubber front edges can be left on if side discharging. However, cut quality may be reduced slightly when mowing lush grass.
